Slate Cummings Earns Stock Crown in Atlanta
Hammond, LA: The Moser Engineering backed Cummings Motorsports team began the NHRA Summit Southern Nationals in the same spot that they finished it: the winner’s circle. The Hammond, LA based team opened the weekend by flexing the muscle of their Stock Eliminator Corvettes, as Slate Cummings earned the B/SA class victory, and his brother Britt went home with the D/SA class crown. Once final eliminations began, the story was more of the same, as Slate Cummings raced to his first NHRA national event win of the young season.
In Stock Eliminator, Slate was nothing less than stellar. He used a .006 reaction time to dispatch recent LODRS winner Lee Norton in the opening round. He followed with back-to-back reactions of .013 and .014 to defeat Southeast Division standouts Jeff Adkinson and Jeff Strickland in rounds two and three. Cummings’ lone slip on the starting line came in the quarterfinal round, where he posted a respectable .040 light alongside Stephen Bell, but Cummings was able to hold on for a tight .005-of-a-second victory. In the semi-final round, he returned to form with a solid .013 reaction time against a red-light start from Robert Strane.
That setup a final round matchup between Cummings and his close friend (and recent national event winner) David Latino. The final round drama was short-lived, however, as Latino left the starting line .003-of-a-second too soon, handing the automatic victory to Cummings. Meanwhile, Slate posted another solid reaction time, .023, and coasted to a 10.66 on his 10.46 dial-in.
The Moser Engineering backed Cummings Motorsports team fielded a whopping seven entries in Atlanta. Aside from Slate’s Stock Eliminator conquest, the team was highlighted by third round showings from Ryan Herem, who wheeled the team’s Phantom dragster in Super Comp, and Slate Cummings, who also advanced to the third stanza in his Moser Engineering-backed Super Stock Cavalier.
With the victory, Slate Cummings moved into the top 50 in the NHRA national points standings, with only four events under his belt early in the 2015 season. In addition to major marketing partner Moser Engineering, the Cummings team relies on products and services from quality manufacturers including Trumble Racing Engines, FTI Torque Converters, Overkill Motorsports, Sunset Performance Engines, B&M Performance, Weldon, Afco, Borla, Brodix Cylinder Heads, Mickey Thompson Tires, K&N, Holley Performance, Amalie Oil, Weld Wheels, Richmond Gear, Altronics, Harwood, Nitroplate, Edelbrock, Mr. Gasket, Jeff Taylor Racing Engines, Biondo Racing Products, Auto Meter, Phantom Race Cars, Simpson Safety Equipment, H&F Performance, Folk Race Cars, Moroso, Weld Wheels, Comp Cams, Renegade Race Fuels, Total Seal, Trend Performance, Diamond Pistons, and Milodon.
