Bogacki Wins Super Gas Yet Again
Joliet, IL: To say that reigning NHRA Super Comp Champion Luke Bogacki has enjoyed a great season in his RacingRV’s backed Super Gas Corvette would be an understatement of gigantic proportions. With his victory at last weekend’s Route 66 Nationals, Bogacki has now appeared in 5 Super Gas final rounds along the NHRA tour, winning four of them (and he’s only attended 7 events)! He has accumulated a ridiculous competition round record of 36-3 in his Charlie Stewart Race Cars built machine, and has jumped to a significant lead in the NHRA Super Gas standings.
While Bogacki himself is quick to point out that the season is still young and a second championship in as many years is far from a lock, the numbers at this stage are staggering. Through just seven events, he has racked up 606 points. Last year’s champion Rick Beckstrom, finished the season with 657 points. Bogacki still has one divisional event that will count fully on his quota; so with a third round appearance he can match Beckstrom’s 2013 total; and he still has an additional 6 events at which to attempt to improve his score!
“It’s been an incredible run to say the least,” Bogacki explained. “Despite our early success, it would be awful premature to say that the championship has been decided. I’m very confident that I’ll reach my preseason goal of 650 points; at this point I feel like 700 is within reach to be honest. If I can do that, I’ll be very happy with my season. Heck, if we stopped now I’d have to be pretty content with what we’ve done. But that doesn’t mean it’s worthy of a championship. Someone could get hot and post a bigger number. That, for the most part is out of my control; so I can’t spend too much time and energy worrying about it.”
Instead, Bogacki focused his efforts on the 1320 foot course at Route 66 Raceway last weekend, and the results showed it. He posted reaction times varying from .004 to .015 throughout the event, and left first in each matchup with the exception of round 4, where Jesse Serna fouled with a -.003 to Bogacki’s strong .004. He began eliminations with victories over Tim Tiry, Ray Sawyer, and Eddy Plazier before advancing on Serna’s red light. After a quarterfinal bye run, Bogacki posted a stellar .013 package to hand JEGS All-Stars Super Gas winner and eventual Super Comp event champion Trevor Larson his first and only loss of the weekend. That set up a familiar final round with Ray Miller III. There, Bogacki came out on top with a .011 induced 9.92 run that trumped the near-perfect 9.902 ET of Miller when he carded and uncharacteristically tardy reaction time.
“I’m driving well for the most part, and I’m really happy with the performance of our car, but it’s not like we’ve been mistake free by any means,” Bogacki mused. “Look at the weekend. Second round I ran Ray Sawyer. He’s great; he’s a perennial top five finisher year after year. Our round was the first run of the day, and I missed the setup. I thought I was going 9.87 and was only going 9.90, so when I dropped to 9.93 I gave him some room. Typically, a racer of his stature would get in on that, but luckily that time I got away with it. Then the run against Jesse (Serna), was again the first round of the day and I missed the dial badly. He went red, and I ran 9.81. People try to give me all kind of credit and say that I was just trying to change things up. Whatever. I wasn’t trying to go 9.81! If he’s .00 beside me there, I’m losing because I would have taken the finish line. Then in the semi-finals against Trevor (Larson), he drops at the finish line and I take way too much stripe. I didn’t even want to look for my win light – I knew it wasn’t coming on. But it did: I was 9.904, and that could’ve just as easily been 9.899. In each of those rounds I was vulnerable, but everything is going my way right now.”
The semi-final victory over Larson may prove valuable at season’s end, as those two appear to be the front runners in the national championship chase. While Bogacki was able to claim the Super Gas victory at Route 66, he was also in contention for a double win Sunday morning before falling to Tom Stalba in the fourth round of Super Comp behind the wheel of his K&N Filters dragster.
“I really want to get a Super Comp win for the folks at K&N, and to make some progress toward competing for another title in the 8.90 class,” Bogacki expressed. “But so far for everything that has gone right in the Corvette has gone wrong in the dragster. All of the coin-flip races that have gone my way in Super Gas have gone the other way in Super Comp. It’s just part of the game. We’ll just keep working, and hopefully we can enjoy some success in our K&N Dragster soon.”

“We really struggled with the Super Gas combination last season,” Bogacki said. “At times I was completely lost out there, and it reflected poorly on Charlie Stewart and everyone involved with our team. We’ve got a great car, and this year we’re proving it, so that feels great.”
Bogacki credits a handful of major changes for the turnaround. Those changes include swapping to the new APD Max Speed carburetor; mounting a set of Mickey Thompson’s 3191w “Bubba” tires; changing the gear ratio in his Moser Engineering rear end; switching to a looser BTE torque converter; and more recently adding a SHARP Stuff external transmission cooler to his program to stabilize transmission and converter temperatures in the late rounds.

The Luke Bogacki Motorsports team will spend much of July away from the NHRA tour, attending just one Lucas Oil Division Series event – the Division 3 event at National Trails Raceway in Columbus, OH. The rest of their July schedule will feature big bucks bracket racing events including the World Footbrake Challenge before the team hosts the 4th annual JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout at I-57 Dragstrip on July 25-27.
