Guest Instructor - Jimmy DeFrank
Jimmy DeFrank’s on-track accomplishments put him in sportsman drag racing’s elite class. By winning the 2012 NHRA Super Stock Championship DeFrank joined Peter Biondo and Greg Stanfield as the only 4-time champions in the Super Stock category. At just 34-years old, DeFrank is an odds-on favorite to become the greatest champion in NHRA Super Stock history before his career comes to a close.
Like the majority of TIBR contributors, Jimmy DeFrank is a second generation racer. His father Jim has been involved in the sport since the 1950’s, when he raced in Pennsylvania. Jim married Jimmy’s mother, Loraine in 1965 and the couple moved to California the very same year. Although Jim has rarely taken the wheel himself, he has been heavily involved in the sport as a car owner for more than 60 years. Some of Jimmy’s earliest memories center around the race track.
“I have been going to the NHRA drag races with my family since I was a baby and I have some great memories from when I was about 6 or 7 years olds and watching our cars run and win in the 1980’s. As I approached driving age I asked my dad if I might be able to drive one of the cars and he said I could have that opportunity if I achieved good grades in high school. I was able to do that and I started racing our 1989 Chevy Camaro in Super Stock GT/HA.”
The rest, as they say, is history. DeFrank has earned 4 NHRA World Championships (1997, 1999, 2009, and 2012), in addition to 10 NHRA Division 7 Championships, all in the wheels-up Super Stock category. He has earned 15 NHRA National Event victories (13 in Super Stock, 2 in Stock) in 41 final round appearances to go along with 40 Lucas Oil Divisional event crowns (39 in Super Stock, 1 in Stock). Most important to DeFrank, all of his success has come at the wheel of family machines, and all with family support. His father, Jim is the patriarch of the family racing team, and his mother Lorraine and younger brother Tony (who is also a past NHRA national event winner) are among his biggest supporters.
The DeFrank family: Jim, Lorraine, Jimmy, and Tony
Just days prior to this writing, DeFrank drove his familiar 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Super Stock machine and 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Stock eliminator entry to a rare double-win at the 2013 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA. By doing so, DeFrank became just the 14th driver in NHRA history to earn two eliminator crowns at the same national event. The victories also solidified his dominance of the historic Southern California facility. To date, DeFrank has earned 8 national event titles in 18 final round appearances at Pomona.
Away from the race track, DeFrank is the Chief Operating Officer of the family business: California Car Cover Company (www.CalCarCover.com
). The company, started by Jimmy’s father Jim, employs the DeFrank family in addition to a large staff. California Car Cover Company is the industry leader in custom car covers and offers a large variety of items for racing, show cars, hot rod enthusiasts, and much more.
ThisIsBracketRacing.com is excited to welcome Jimmy to the TIBR team of instructors, and to congratulate him on his recent successes!
