Guest Instructor - Brandon Schmall

At just 20 years of age Brandon Schmall is already an accomplished on-track competitor, with a NHRA national championship to his credit. Schmall, currently a Junior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Mathematics, starting his driving career in the Junior Dragster ranks at age 8. As a second generation racer, Brandon has been involved in the sport for as long as he can remember; his father and older brother raced throughout his childhood and are active competitors to this day (Brandon’s brother Andy has a pair of NHRA Division 5 E.T. Finals to his credit).

Brandon first took the wheel of a “big” car just 4 years ago, after turning 16 and earning his Minnesota state driver’s license. Since, he has become one of the most feared and respected bracket competitors in the region, proving his talents in both the Box and No Box categories. Schmall’s crowning achievement came in 2011, when he not only drove to the NHRA Division 5 Pro ET Championship, but went on to Pomona, CA and earned the Pro ET National Championship in NHRA’s prestigious runoff at the season-ending NHRA Finals. Brandon details both his Division 5 Finals victory and national championship runoff in his guest tutorial “How I Won It” column here on TIBR.

Brandon is yet to compete in any class on the NHRA Lucas Oil circuit, but he has earned quite a reputation within the upper Midwest bracket racing scene. He has taken the wheel for multiple car owners and proven his versatility by winning $5,000-to-win events in multiple vehicles and for different owners. In addition to winning the 2011 NHRA title, Schmall was also crowed “King of the Track” at Cedar Falls Raceway and earned the NHRA Division 5 Summit ET Driver of the Year crown. That season, he also earned both the Super Pro ET and Pro ET points championships in the Midwest Drag Racers Association (MDRA). The only other competitor to claim season championships in both categories of the series is Brandon’s brother, Andy.

Sibling rivalry: Brandon (far) vs. Andy

In addition, Brandon closed the 2011 campaign as the 2nd place finisher in Super Pro at Cedar Falls Raceway, and was a member of the Cedar Falls Division 5 Finals team that earned the team championship.

Last season, Schmall finished the MDRA season as the 2nd ranked Pro ET driver, and also took 2nd place honors in Pro ET points at Cedar Falls Raceway. He once again represented his home facility at the NHRA Division 5 E.T. Finals, and once again helped team Cedar Falls earn the overall team title. In his brief stay behind the wheel, Schmall has earned four $5,000 event wins, and split another without running the final; all while competing almost exclusively in local events at tracks like Cedar Falls Raceway, Brainerd International Raceway, Rock Falls Raceway, and more.

At we’re honored to welcome Brandon to our All-Star roster of guest instructors. Check out his column on the Guest Tutorials page here on TIBR!
